Here at SpaceCenter Eye Associates, serving the Houston bay area, we can help you determine if LASIK eye surgery would benefit you. LASIK helps correct refractive errors that cause astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia by reshaping your cornea in order to allow light to focus correctly on the back of your eye.
What is LASIK Eye Surgery?
If you are considering permanent vision correction, you may be wondering, what is LASIK eye surgery? LASIK is an acronym for laser in-situ keratomileusis, and it is one most effect ways to permanently correct certain vision problems. The procedure takes about 5 minutes per eye. However, both eyes are not generally corrected on the same day.
During the surgery, the ophthalmologist will cut a thin flap in your cornea and fold it away from your eye. Then, the eye surgeon will correct your vision problems by reshaping your cornea, which involves removing small amounts of tissue. At the end of the surgery, the flap will be folded over the surgery site to protect it.
Are There Any Risks Associated with the Surgery?
LASIK is about 96 percent effective and considered extremely safe. However, there are risks associated with the surgery. Common complications include over or under-correction, dry eye, trouble seeing at night and problems with the flap.
